Power Down a Short Film by Bradley Murray Duration 15 minutes

Production Dates 24 - 28 July 2017

Location - The hinterland of Byron Bay, NSW.

Synopsis - Night finds Beth in a dark corner of a bar drowned in minimalist techno. She stares across a sea of phones lighting up the dark atmosphere. Her eyes find Tom, Emile, Jess and Ryan. Tom was found sitting in shit playing some MMO. Emile was addicted to online porn - the dark stuff. Jess was addicted to media of the social variety. Ryan was addicted to online gaming and more recently gambling. Beth becomes hyper aware of everybody bowing to their phones. Homage to a digital planet. She has to escape.

The five conjure a ticket out of their digital world. They are placed into a new environment that is both seductive and warm, alien and ominous. Each start to open up to real human communication. Beth’s strong emotional side is set on fire. She falls for Ryan and his strong, unspoken sense of herself. They move beyond each other to find something more - hidden in the magic of the mountains - something they both yearn for but have lost behind the wall of technology.

Auditions - TBC. Please email to secure an audition preferably with a showreel.

Casting -
Mary the bus driver inhabits an other worldly space - and is able to bridge the gap between a cybernetic world and tapping deeply into a natural world. She will be a conduit and guide to the light side and needs to be played by an actor with a broad craft base.
Females, aged 28 to 50 from Australia .
No previous acting experience required.

The Students will be guided by Mary but equally need to be able to bridge the arc from dark to light. For the character arcs to be believable everybody needs to be aware of these two very different worlds and immerse themselves completely in these environments.

Beth is a Gothic Lolita punk. To the outside world she is strong and feisty and irrepressible. She has an eye for fashion and a appetite for art. Inside she is consumed by something from her past that has infected her relationship with her mother. The further she travels into the Australian Wilderness, the closer she gets to discovering something magic hidden in the mountains. Females, aged 18 to 23 from Australia.

No previous acting experience required.

Ryan is a gaming and online gambling wizard. He is trying to come to terms with the breakdown of a relationship. As he travels up the mountain he begins to fall for Beth’s loud, outspoken sense of self. And Beth starts to fall for his quietly confident sense of self.
Males, aged 18 to 23 from Australia.

No previous acting experience required.

Tom is a gaming phenomenon. But has been known to spend too much time online. His presence in the MMO community is renowned. As he travels up the mountain he starts to realise that there is something he is missing.

Males, aged 18 to 23 from Australia.
No previous acting experience required.

Jess is a social media rockstar. But the more likes she receives, the less she likes herself. She has a passion for electronic music and cocaine. As she travels up the mountain she begins to open up to a world of new possibilities.
Females, aged 18 to 23 from Australia.

No previous acting experience required.

Emile is a superstar DJ. His passion is Berlin Techno and the super club Berghain. He has a serious addiction to chat rooms that has led him on a dark path. As he travels up the mountain he starts to tap into a deeper aspect of himself.
Males, aged 18 to 23 from Australia.
No previous acting experience required.

Conclusion
Can we take a group of technologically addicted students and transform them into beings that live, breathe and engage with one another? I hope to do just that. Come on a journey with me. Tell a story of a generation disconnected, disaffected and disengaged - a powerful story of transformation.
